Industry Engagement

IMG_3550

Industries, governments, companies and businesses are increasingly recognizing that forming relationships with First Nations makes good business sense and are taking steps to build effective relationships that result in mutual benefits.

Benefits for the Ktunaxa (Ktunaxa First Nations, Ktunaxanin̓tik) include being a part of the planning processes, incorporating Ktunaxa values, stewardship principles; employment, training and education opportunities; equity ownership, procurement and contracting etc. On the other hand, benefits for industry can include certainty for processes, access to workforce, access to local knowledge and ability to conduct the work/project/business.

Industry engagement work revolves around relationships and relationship building. Being aware of, learning, and understanding Ktunaxa values is also core to being able to support many economic/business opportunities. While profits are a priority to any business, the shareholder of an Indigenous corporation is the community itself. The values and goals in an Indigenous partnership involve not only maximizing profits and minimizing costs but also economic development that makes communities stronger in the long-term.

Our Industry Engagement team connects and works with the Ktunaxa First Nation entrepreneurs, Economic Development Office/Officers, Business Development Officers, and their Corporation Chief Executive Officers – gaining awareness on community priorities and interests; finding, matching and supporting meaningful partnerships with mutually beneficial opportunities based on holistic, values-driven approaches.

Ktunaxa Nation & Teck Impact Management and Benefits Agreement (IMBA)

The Ktunaxa Nation and Teck have signed an Impact Management and Benefits Agreement (IMBA), a comprehensive agreement that sets out commitments and obligations for both parties.

The agreement formalizes the long-standing relationship between the Ktunaxa Nation and Teck, and creates a framework for greater cooperation and clarity on topics including:

  • Consultation and engagement
  • Environment and land stewardship
  • Cultural resource management
  • Employment and business opportunities for Ktunaxa citizens

The implementation of the IMBA is done via three working groups:

The Environmental Working Group

The Cultural Working Group

The Procurement and Employment Operational Working Group (Composed of the Procurement Task Group and the Employment Task Group)

The Procurement Task Group (PTG) is tasked with implementing the provisions relating to procurement on behalf of the Ktunaxa Nation. Representation at the PTG includes the four Ktunaxa First Nations, the KNC and Teck Coal.
The Procurement Task Group or PTG, works with Ktunaxa entrepreneurs, Ktunaxa First Nations and Ktunaxa business to help onboard those interested in becoming a Teck vendor, and to identify procurement opportunities at Teck’s Qukin ʔamakʔis (Elk Valley) operations.
