In the beginning
We have always been here in ɁamakɁis Ktunaxa, (our homelands, our traditional territory.)
Archeological records show us in our homelands going back at least 12,000 years.
Our Creation history tells us that Spirit Animals lived here before that.

All living things.
Our ancestors found everything they needed in nature: Food, medicine and materials for shelter and clothing.
They moved through our homelands in a seasonal pattern, following the vegetation and hunting cycles.
They developed advanced hunting, fishing and gathering techniques, along with the knowledge of how to respectfully harvest, store and share these gifts from the Creator.
Our spiritual values came from the desire to honour and thank the Creator, and to work together for the collective good.
A language like no other language
Our language is unique and unrelated to any other language in the world.
Ktunaxa names of land and water features all around ɁamakɁis Ktunaxa link us to our homelands and show we have been here since time immemorial.
Recent history
European settlers arrived in ɁamakɁis Ktunaxa in the mid-1800s. They established forts and settlements.
Then, the Government of Canada forced Ktunaxa onto Indian Reserves. The government set up Indian Agencies and the Indian Band system.
