Ktunaxa First Nations & Tribes

Ktunaxanin̓tik are those who are Ktunaxa by ancestry.

Each Ktunaxanin̓tik may have kinship ties to one or more of the Ktunaxa First Nations and Tribes located within our traditional territory.

Ktunaxa First Nations (Canada)

(Ktunaxa) Kootenai Tribes (United States)

Our traditional homelands, ɁamakɁis Ktunaxa, span across the current international border between Canada and the U.S. states of Idaho and Montana.

Before the border on the 49th parallel was established, Ktunaxa groups moved throughout our homelands freely, according to our goals and the seasons.

Ktunaxa Nation Council

At the organizational level, the four Ktunaxa First Nations in Canada make up the Ktunaxa Nation Council.

These four nations work together and individually to represent Ktunaxanin̓tik interests.

These interests include:

  • rights and title acknowledgement
  • land and resources stewardship
  • economic development
  • health and social services
  • and the enhancement of Ktunaxa language, culture and values.

The two Ktunaxa tribes in the United States have their own governance structures, and sometimes work with Ktunaxa Nation Council on issues affecting all groups.

Now, as ever, all Ktunaxanin̓tik are part of the Ktunaxa Nation, no matter where they currently live.
